What This Feature Does
When a shopper brings up a discount code in chat — types one in, or accepts one your AI just told them about — your Rep AI assistant can now apply that code to their cart right there in the conversation. The shopper doesn't have to copy the code, leave the chat, and paste it at checkout.
Paired with real-time coupon lookup, this closes the loop on a discount conversation:
Shopper: "Does SUMMER20 still work?"
Your AI: "Yes — SUMMER20 is active and gives you 20% off our Summer Collection."
Shopper: "Great, apply it."
Your AI: "Done — SUMMER20 is applied, so you're getting 20% off your order."
The discount carries straight through to the shopper's checkout total. (See Help Shoppers Use Discount Codes with Real-Time Coupon Lookup.)
Why This Matters for Your Store
Fewer drop-offs at the exact moment shoppers are ready to buy. Leaving chat to hunt for a code field is a real abandonment point. Removing that step keeps the shopper in the conversation and moves them straight to checkout.
Truthful answers when a code doesn't work. If a code is expired, already used up, or doesn't cover what's in the cart, your AI says so and explains why — instead of letting the shopper discover it at checkout and give up.
Your Shopify discount rules are respected exactly as you set them. Every code is validated against your live Shopify discounts before it's applied. Collection-scoped and product-scoped codes are checked against what's actually in the shopper's cart, so a code that shouldn't apply won't be applied.
How It Works
There's nothing to enable or configure — this works automatically as part of your AI's shopping conversations.
A shopper names a specific code. They type it themselves, or say yes to a code your AI just described.
Your AI checks it against your Shopify discounts. Is it active? Has it expired? Has it hit its usage limit? Does it apply to the items in this cart?
If the code is valid, your AI applies it and confirms in one sentence, naming the code and what the shopper is getting.
If the code can't be applied, your AI explains why in plain language and doesn't apply anything.
What Your AI Will and Won't Do
Your AI will:
Apply a code the shopper typed or explicitly accepted
Apply a code discussed earlier in the same conversation when the shopper says something like "yes, use that one" — without asking them to type it again
Handle percentage-off and fixed-amount-off codes
Explain the specific reason a code was refused: expired, not recognized, doesn't apply to the items in the cart, or usage limit reached
Ask the shopper to confirm before replacing a discount code the cart already has
Your AI won't:
Invent, guess, or generate a discount code. If a shopper asks for "any discount you can give me" and you haven't set one up, your AI won't produce one
Apply a code the shopper never mentioned — it never volunteers a code apply on its own
Claim a code was applied when it wasn't
Which Codes Work
Native Shopify discount codes that are active in your Shopify Admin under Discounts
Store-wide, collection-scoped, and product-scoped codes — scope is enforced against the shopper's actual cart contents, in both directions: qualifying carts get the discount, non-qualifying carts get an explanation
Percentage off and fixed amount off
Not covered: bulk campaigns that generate a separate unique code per shopper through a third-party app. Those codes aren't part of the discount catalog your AI validates against, so your AI won't be able to apply them.
Platform Availability
Shopify stores get the full experience described above — the code is applied and the discount is reflected in the checkout total.
WooCommerce stores get a link-based version: the shopper is sent to a page on your site that applies the code for them.
Salesforce Commerce Cloud stores don't support in-chat apply. Your AI will still look up and explain the code, then tell the shopper to enter it at checkout.
Best Practices
Keep retired codes disabled in Shopify. Your AI reads your live discount settings, so a code you've paused will be correctly reported as unavailable.
Be deliberate with scoped codes. Because your AI enforces scope, a shopper with the wrong items in their cart will be told the code doesn't apply. Spelling out the qualifying collection in your promotion description sets the right expectation up front.
Mention your codes where shoppers will ask about them. Promotions in your Knowledge Base, suggestion chips, and Sales Skills all give shoppers a reason to bring up a code — which is what triggers this feature. (See Increase Conversion with AI-Powered Promotions: Using Discount and Informational Campaigns.)
Watch usage limits on codes you promote heavily. Once a code is exhausted, every shopper who asks for it will be told it's no longer available.
Common Questions
Do I need to turn this on?
No. There's no setting to configure and no new permission to grant.
Will my AI start handing out discounts I didn't create?
No. Your AI only works with codes that already exist and are active in your Shopify store, and only when the shopper brings a specific code into the conversation. It cannot create codes.
What if the shopper already has a code on their cart?
Your AI asks the shopper to confirm before replacing it rather than silently swapping one discount for another.
Does the shopper still see the discount at checkout?
Yes. Applying the code in chat updates the cart, and the reduced total appears at checkout as normal.
Does this work if the shopper is browsing in another language?
Yes. Confirmations and refusal explanations are delivered in the shopper's conversation language.
Troubleshooting
A shopper says the AI applied a code, but the discount wasn't on their order.
In rare cases — within the first few seconds of a brand-new chat session, before cart details have fully synced — a scoped code can be reported as applied when it doesn't qualify. If a shopper reports this, ask them to reload and confirm the discount on the cart or checkout page before paying, and contact Rep AI support with the conversation details so the team can review it.
My AI says a code doesn't apply to the shopper's cart, but I think it should.
Check the code's scope in your Shopify Admin under Discounts. If it's limited to specific collections or products, the shopper's cart has to contain a qualifying item. Your AI applies the same rule Shopify would apply at checkout.
I just created a code and my AI doesn't recognize it.
Make sure the code is saved and active in your Shopify Admin under Discounts. Codes that are still drafts or are disabled will be reported as unavailable.
A shopper asked for a discount and my AI didn't offer one.
This is intentional. Your AI won't invent a code or offer a discount you haven't set up. To have your AI proactively mention an offer, add it as a promotion in your Knowledge Base or configure a Sales Skill that includes a discount.
